The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is a historical mystery novel inspired by real-life diary of 18th-century midwife Martha Ballard, who investigates a murder in Hallowell Maine, after a body is found in the frozen Kennebec River. The plot centers on Martha’s efforts to uncover the truth behind the death of a man accused of rape, challenging the patriarchal society of her time as she uses her unique position as a healer and diarist to seek justice, blending historical fact with fictional suspense.
